However, it was the mid-70s underground scene in New York City, specifically the dive bar CBGB, that codified the sound. Bands like The Ramones, Television, and Patti Smith merged the speed of garage rock with the artistic edge of the New York avant-garde. The Ramones’ 1976 debut album was a sonic grenade: songs barely lasted two minutes, lyrics were simple and catchy, and the volume was relentless. It was a direct rebuttal to the bloated "prog rock" and disco dominating the airwaves.
