Thirteen years later, Doo-Wops & Hooligans remains Bruno Mars’ most raw and romantic work. While 24K Magic pushed into funk territory and Silk Sonic explored retro soul, this debut captures a young man at the crossroads of heartbreak and hope.

Before releasing Doo-Wops & Hooligans , Bruno Mars was primarily known as an industry songwriter and guest feature vocalist, lending his hooks to hits like B.o.B’s "Nothin' on You" and Travie McCoy’s "Billionaire." The album's unique title reflects its dual musical nature. As Mars explained, the "Doo-Wops" represent the sweet, romantic, and simplistic love songs influenced by his father's love for 1950s and 60s pop. The "Hooligans," by contrast, represent the darker, edgier, and more aggressive rock and reggae components found in tracks like "Liquor Store Blues" and "Runaway Baby".
