Immediately after the crackdown, Bengalis in the army, police, and EPR (East Pakistan Rifles) mutinied. Leaders formed the Mujibnagar Government on April 17, 1971. The regular army was weak, so the Mukti Bahini resorted to guerrilla warfare. They destroyed bridges, blew up fuel depots, and ambushed patrols. The Pakistani army controlled the cities by day, but the countryside belonged to the freedom fighters by night.
