The EF550 was born out of a necessity to provide a lighter, yet immensely powerful alternative to the massive V10s. It was designed to bridge the gap between high-torque, low-speed applications (like dump trucks) and high-speed, long-haul applications (like freight transport). It succeeded the older EF750 in many applications, offering similar torque characteristics in a slightly more compact and lighter package.

The Hino EF550 is a heavy-duty rigid truck (often configured as a dump truck, concrete mixer, or cargo hauler) produced by Hino Motors, a Toyota subsidiary. It sits in the "Super Dolphin Profia" lineage, effectively the predecessor to today’s Hino 700 series.

Flatbed and box truck versions were used for industrial machinery transport. 550hp allows this rigid truck to haul well above the standard 24-ton GVM limit (on private land).

Being an older design, it does not meet the strict Euro 5 or Euro 6 standards found in newer Hino 500 or 700 series models [1, 17].
