Lupin | Iii Film

For much of the 80s and early 90s, theatrical Lupin III films were rare. Instead, the franchise pivoted to annual Television Specials (beginning with 1989’s Bye Bye, Lady Liberty ). While inconsistent, this era produced two films that rival the theatrical canon:

Directed by Soji Yoshikawa, The Mystery of Mamo (released in the US as Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo ) is the first theatrical Lupin III film, and it remains the strangest. This is not the Lupin you show a newcomer. lupin iii film

(1985): Director Seijun Suzuki (a legendary live-action filmmaker) brought his chaotic, pop-art sensibility to Lupin. The result is a garish, hilarious, and utterly nonsensical romp through New York City, complete with a rapping policewoman and a giant flying pyramid. It’s an acquired taste, but a cult classic.
