This fracture reveals a deep wound. It exposes that the coalition of LGBTQ was never a natural family, but a political one—a tactical alliance of sexual and gender outlaws. When the threat of the religious right was existential, the alliance held. But as gay and lesbian people have achieved mainstream acceptance, the alliance’s fault lines have become seismic. The trans community now faces a wave of legislative attacks that mirrors the anti-gay panic of the 1980s, while much of the LGB establishment sits on its hands, exhausted by the fight or secretly sympathetic to the skeptics.

The 1990s saw a painful schism for many trans individuals within the LGB community. As the gay and lesbian movement pivoted toward "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and marriage equality—goals based on sexual orientation —transgender rights (centered on gender identity ) were often seen as a political liability.
