For older Macs (2011–2012), you simply hold Option (Alt) on boot. For 2013–2016 unsupported models (MacBook Air 5,2, etc.), you must go into Startup Security Utility (Command+R) and set Security Level to "No Security" and Allow Boot Media to "Allow booting from external media."
