In Minneapolis, Minnesota, a band called Lipps, Inc. (a pun on "lip sync") was attempting to find their footing. The group was the brainchild of Steven Greenberg, a multi-instrumentalist and producer who had been working the local scene. Unlike the polished sheen of New York or the calculated Euro-disco of the time, Minneapolis had a grittier, funkier sound—a lineage that would later produce icons like Prince and The Time.
