Indonesian cinema had a golden age in the 1970s–80s (e.g., Teguh Karya’s art films and the horror-comedy Pintu Pintu Neraka ). However, the 1998 Reformasi period nearly collapsed the industry due to economic crisis and video piracy. A revival began in the late 2000s with horror franchises ( Kuntilanak ) and teen rom-coms ( Ada Apa dengan Cinta? ). Nonetheless, for most Indonesians before 2010, television remained the primary source of video entertainment.
