To understand the magnitude of the current scene, one must look at its origins. For much of the 20th century, the Albanian music scene in North Macedonia was dominated by Muzikë Popullore (folk music). Legends like Esat Redžepi and groups such as Liria laid the groundwork, preserving the Albanian language and identity through song during times of political suppression.
