At its core, (short for "Flowchart Oligator") is a visual programming environment that allows students to create control systems using flowcharts instead of text-based code. Developed by the UK-based company Inkling Software (later acquired by Logotron ), Flowol 2 was designed to demystify the concept of a control program—the invisible logic behind traffic lights, fairground rides, elevators, and automated manufacturing systems.
Flowol 2 is not just about outputs. Students learn to read analogue and digital sensor values. They can compare a light level to a threshold, wait for a switch to close, or count how many times a sensor has been triggered using variables. The variable system is simple but robust—students can create named variables (e.g., "counter" or "product_count") and perform arithmetic (add, subtract, compare) within decision symbols.
