From a technical standpoint, the (version EQBuildDate: Jul 25 2006 16:08:30 , protocol version 0x6.2 ) was the last version of the official EverQuest client that was relatively easy to reverse-engineer. Why?

You must own an original copy of EverQuest Titanium to play on Project 1999. The P1999 team does not distribute the client. You must find your own discs or a legal backup.

Under normal circumstances, the Titanium client would have merely been a footnote in the game's multi-decade history. As live servers continued to receive aggressive patches and subsequent expansions, old installation discs usually became useless coasters. However, the exact timing of Titanium's release coincided with the burgeoning growth of the reverse-engineered server movement, spearheaded by the open-source project known as EQEmu (EverQuest Emulator).
