The ADF uses a mechanical clutch to engage the rollers. If this clutch fails, the rollers won't turn. You will hear a motor noise, but the paper won't move, causing an instant jam error.

While the ADF cover is open, look for a small, rectangular grey rubber pad. This is the separation pad. If it is shiny, glazed, or worn smooth, it will cause jams. Gently wipe it with a damp, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol on this pad, as it dries out the rubber.

Close the ADF jam access cover firmly until it clicks. Plug the printer back in and turn it on. Try scanning one sheet of paper—not a stack. If it feeds correctly, you have cleared the jam.

The is a common nuisance, but it is rarely a death sentence for your printer. In 90% of cases, the solution is a combination of deep cleaning the rollers, removing microscopic paper scraps from the sensors, and properly fanning your document stacks.
