You have arrived. Do not cross the safety ropes. The ground here is brittle crust barely 10cm thick. The view is surreal: green mossy cliffs give way to yellow sulfur crystals and billowing white columns that swirl into the river below. This is the quintessential Futakin Valley photo spot.
The best time for photography. The contrast between the vibrant green forest and the white steam is stunning. However, the humidity makes the heat from the fumaroles oppressive. Bring 2 liters of water per person.
Geologists classify Futakin Valley as a high-temperature hydrothermal system. The volcanic activity beneath Mount Myoko (2,454 meters) heats underground aquifers to over 150°C (302°F). As this pressurized water rises through fractured rhyolite rock, it flashes into steam upon contact with the cooler atmosphere.
