Under pressure from President Megawati Soekarnoputri, rival factions were brought to Malino, South Sulawesi, in December 2001. The Malino Declaration officially ended the open warfare. Communities were segregated into "safe zones," and mass displacement began. The initial fighting had nothing to do with theology
