The PlayStation 2 had an incredibly long lifespan (2000–2013). Over these 13 years, Sony released multiple hardware revisions to cut manufacturing costs and reduce the physical size of the console. With these hardware changes came changes to the firmware—the internal software that runs the system.

At its core, a compatibility list is a matrix. One axis lists free software (Linux distributions, BSD variants, antivirus rescue disks, firmware updaters). The other axis lists computer models or motherboard chipsets. The cells contain a simple status: Boots , Boots with workarounds , or Fails . When any of these steps fail, you get a boot failure
