On October 9, 2009, the Centaur upper stage impacted the lunar surface in the Cabeus crater, located near the Moon's south pole. The impact created a massive debris plume that was observed by the Shepherding spacecraft and several other NASA spacecraft, including the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). The impact site was selected based on data from NASA's Lunar Prospector mission, which suggested the presence of water ice in the permanently shadowed craters near the Moon's south pole.
