Goosebumps

Goosebumps are the result of a reflex called the pilomotor reflex. When you are cold or experience a strong emotion, your sympathetic nervous system—the part responsible for the "fight or flight" response—kicks into gear. It sends a signal to the tiny muscles at the base of each hair follicle, known as the arrector pili muscles.

In 1992, Scholastic approached Stine with a challenge: write a horror series for middle-grade readers (ages 7–12). The market for "scary stories" at that time was virtually non-existent. Parents thought horror would give their kids nightmares; librarians thought it was low-brow. Goosebumps
