Standard AMR (narrowband) samples audio at 8 kHz, which limits the frequency range to 300–3400 Hz. This is why old phone calls sound "tinny" or mechanical. AMR-WB (Wideband) was introduced to double this sampling rate to 16 kHz, capturing audio from 50–7000 Hz.
