The platform, commercially known as Itanium , was Intel’s ambitious attempt to create a high-end 64-bit processor architecture radically different from the x86 lineage. Unlike AMD’s x86-64 (now simply called x64), IA-64 relied on Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) . Itanium processors excelled in massive parallel workloads but failed to gain traction in consumer markets.
