A circus train breaks down near Toorwater. The Paljas (literally "Clown" in Afrikaans), a cheerful magician named Frik, and his beautiful wife, Charlize, set up camp. Frik gives a magic trick to Annette, which eventually wakes Koos from his catatonic state.
